About Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar Temple:
Arunachalam Temple is one of the popular and ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva – Arunachaleswarar, located in Thiruvannamalai, Tamilnadu. It is said that this temple has more than 1000 years of history patronized by the great saints including Appar, Sambamdar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar and Arunagirinathar.
Here, Lord Shiva Arunachaleswarar is worshiped in the form of fire, one of the five elements that composed the Universe also called as panchaboothas, others are vayu, akash, jalam and earth. Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswarar temple is located on the foothills of Annamalai hills that is located 180 KM from The Chennai and 80 km from Vellore.
Thiruvannamalai Girivalam is a circumambulation path around the foot Annamalai hills. The total distance of the path is 14 kilometers. Girivalam is performed during the full moon day called as Pournami in Tamil Calendar.
Thiruvannamalai Girivalam is performed by devotes to worship eight lingams, also called as Ashtalingam. These lingams are positioned in different directions, each signifies the direction of the Earth. The eight Ashtalingam are
- Indra lingam – East Direction
- Agni lingam – Southeast Direction
- Yama lingam – South Direction
- Niruthi lingam – South West Direction
- Varuna lingam – West Direction
- Vayu lingam – North West direction
- Kubera lingam – North Direction
- Esanya lingam – North East Direction
Ashtalingam Position and Directions:
Indra lingam is the first lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the east direction. It is said to be installed by the Lord Indran. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Sun and Sukiran, worshipping this lingam ensure long life and prosperity.
Agni lingam is the Second lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the southeast direction, located near the Lotus Tank. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Chandran, Moon, worshipping this lingam ensures good health and keeps away sickness.
Yama lingam is the third lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the South direction. It is said to be installed by the Lord Yama, God of Death. This lingam is located near to holy tank known as Simma theertham. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Sevvai, worshipping this lingam will ensure good financial wealth.
Niruthi lingam is the fourth lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the Southwest direction. It is said to be installed by the king of the giants. This lingam is located near to holy tank known as Sani theertham. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Ragu, worshipping this lingam will ensure problem-free life.
Varuna lingam is the fifth lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the west direction. It is said to be installed by the Varuna god who is the creator of rain on this earth. This lingam is located near to holy tank known as Varuna theertham. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Sani, worshipping this lingam protects devotees from critical illness and elevated social development.
Vayu lingam is the sixth lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the North West direction. It is said to be installed by the Vayu baghavan, god of Air & Atmosphere. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Kethu (Kedhu), worshipping this lingam protects devotees from general illness, heart alignments, stomach and lung problems.
Kubera lingam is the seventh lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the North direction. It is said to be installed by the god of wealth. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Guru, worshipping this lingam will ensure wealth and prosperity.
Esanya lingam is the eight lingam in the Girivalam path, this lingam is placed in the North-East direction. It is said to be installed by the Lord Esanyan. The dominant Navagraha of this lingam is the Budhan, worshipping this lingam ensures peace of mind and positive attitude to devotees that help them to succeed in life.
